| What is
Mobility?
Mobile solutions (Via a hand held device)
Schools are now more mobile than in any time
in the past. Principals and Teachers are no longer tied to a
desk or office. They now travel to perform their business tasks;
within their enterprise, interstate or abroad.
------------------------------------------------------------
Quite simply:
1. There is no need to be in the office or
classroom to be able to communicate
2. School applications can be accessed from anywhere
3. Access your school applications where and when you need them
4. Ability to be always connected
-------------------------------------------------------------
Many existing educational processes are orientated
around school-based employees and are not always friendly to
mobile workers. Enhanced mobile technologies give schools the
opportunity to review tasks performed by mobile employees, from
their perspective.
Delivering a faster, more consistent
response
Using a mobile device to take the roll, or
send homework can radically alter the school's reporting position,
and therefore its perceived performance. Mobile technology therefore
helps the school to respond, and to measure itself, in real
time
-------------------------------------------------------------
The role of the teacher
The role of the teacher is central to the successful
implementation of any eLearning/mobility Plan. The key parts
of the teacher's role include:
• Being open to trying new ideas.
• Being willing to take risks in the use of eLearning/mobility.
• Being willing to work in teacher teams to incorporate
eLearning/mobility into current units of work.
• Identify why, when and where eLearning/mobility is appropriate
- because it offers a benefit in terms of:
• Being faster
• Being better, or more engaging
• Can't do it any other way
• Fosters collaboration and communication
• Keep abreast with new trends
• Share practice with colleagues.
Thought:
As with mobile phones some years ago, schools
will find increasingly that pupils own their own PDA –
if only a parental cast-off – and will have to decide
how to respond if these are brought into school. Are they to
be encouraged, or banned?
We would not have any problem convincing the
students to use a PDA. The potential
for it to be a multi-functional device that students can take
total ownership of and which has endless ‘communication’
applications is surely something we want?
