TecEd provides a range of ICT professional development opportunities for teachers.
Teacher professional development is often overlooked when it comes to implementing ICT into a learning and teaching environment. When a school does embark on ICT professional development it is important for teacher skills and knowledge to be assessed so that the programme that is designed best fits their requirements.
Research indicates that ICT has the potential to enhance and transform children’s learning if selected and used appropriately. Educators’ understanding of teaching and learning, and of how ICT can support children’s learning and development, plays an important role in learning in the early childhood years.

Teacher Capabilities:
As part of the ICT professional development plan, schools should be required to measure teacher ICT skills and knowledge. To do this we have developed an online survey which is designed to be answered by teachers before they embark on an ICT professional development initiative. The survey will be re-administered at the completion of the project in order to measure any resulting growth in teacher skills and knowledge.
Students cannot be expected to benefit from technology if their teachers are neither familiar nor comfortable with it. As such, teachers need to be supported in their efforts to use technology. The general lack of experience with technology is the primary reason it is not used in the classrooms.
Therefore, ongoing professional development is necessary to help ensure teachers learn not only how to use technology, but also how to provide meaningful instruction and activities through the application of technology in the classroom.
